After doing the Body Scan meditation for the first time you may have some questions. What does noticing sensations in the body actually do for us? How can doing that actually lead to any of the benefits ascribed to mindfulness? Some of these questions will be answered by you during this course, but in the interest of providing some insights I'll share a couple things. Increasing your awareness of sensations in the body helps us explore the difference between thinking about a sensation and experiencing it directly through our senses, which helps us discern between the thinking mind and sensing mind. It also trains us to observe sensations without over-analyzing or getting caught up in judgment, which has key crossover effects in other areas of our lives. Finally, a keener awareness of the body can act as an early warning system for incoming highly charged emotional reactions and can give you the space to make a shift from reaction to response. However, to read the messages the body sends, we must be able to pay clearer attention at a higher resolution to sensations that can arise from any part of the body and so we do the body scan to build that skill.
